Beastman x East Editions

Beastman x East Editions

A limited timed release that will be available for Pre Order to Australia and Indonesia via EAST EDITIONS (link here) with delivery February 2022.

We have been lucky enough to work together with Bradley Eastman (BEASTMAN), one of Australia’s most distinctive and prolific Contemporary Artists, on a beautiful collaborative coffee table, all made possible by East Editions.

Bradley and ourself have been friends for over 20 years and over that time his body of work has continued to evolve, while also building an offshoot project East Editions with his wife Kelly in 2013. East Editions offers a range of collaborative limited edition products by selected makers and artists, produced with an organic approach and sustainability in mind.

Bradley has always been a big inspiration and a leading force of Australian contemporary artists taking their work to the world. With Bradleys’s iconic art style influenced by the biodiversity, symbolism and design aesthetics behind nature’s growth patterns and organic landscapes, when East Editions reached out with the opportunity to collaborate on a furniture item with Bradley we couldn’t pass it up.

Brad had noticed some of our earlier chevron pattern work in some of our contract pieces, and approached us with an idea of transforming his abstract geometric pattern work into a coffee table design using the same technique. One of the key points was working out the correct colour tones between the species of woods available and how each material would contrast each other after applying a natural clear danish oil finish.

We worked with Walnut for the dark tones, Teak for the medium tones and Ash for the lightest tones, then pulled it all together with an Oak frame, which we thought was a nice neutral tone that married perfectly with the contrasting pattern work, without over powering or distracting from it’s beauty.

The carpentry work itself is actually quite technical with so many different directional components and curves, but we were able to come up with more of a engineered approach to the pattern work combined with the precision of our CNC router to cut the shapes. From there we utilised our hot press for the lamination of the section cuts and married them together on the Oak frame work.

It’s projects and alternative briefs like this that we enjoy the most. Working together with great creative minds and individuals like Bradley that have an acute vision for their work, and being able to translate that piece into a finished item is such a challenging but rewarding process.
